Adam Grant is one my favorite authors and organizational psychologists. His first book “Give and Take” was the inspiration for me to dedicate one chapter on the importance of generosity in leadership in my book “Intangibles”. Since then, he has written several amazing books such as “Originals” and “Think Again.”
His most recent book “Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things” was published earlier this month and it doesn’t disappoint! The main argument is that as a society we tend to over-celebrate exceptional talent and innate potential, but what we ought to do is to recognize the individuals that show significant improvement over time, despite their original lack of talent. In short, we should think about how to become better at improving.
Here are a few gems that caught my attention:
- The key to learning & improvement is to seek uncomfortable situations and to start doing things, even while still a beginner. For example, don’t wait for mastery before starting to speak a new language.
- Personality is how you show up every day, character is how you act on your difficult days
- Niceness is withholding information so you can protect people’s feelings today. Kindness is providing accurate and sometimes uncomfortable information so people can grow tomorrow.
