One leader that I have been following for a while is Ginny Rometty, the former CEO of IBM who radically transformed the company with her leadership and service to others.

Her recent book “Good Power: Leading Positive Change in Our Lives, Work, and World” came out a couple of months ago and is full of wisdom and insights for all leaders. Good power is about being of service to team members, clients and customers. It’s about yielding influence to change hearts & creating belief in a better reality. Rometti grew up very poor. When her dad abandoned the family one Thanksgiving Eve, he left her mother with five kids to take care of and with no money or formal education. Ginny was determined to use education to change her life around. Her journey from college led her all the way to the top position at IBM.

Becoming the first female CEO of IBM was never her intention: she just wanted to grow, learn and be of service to others. She always took stretch assignments such as taking charge of the insurance consulting business & overseeing the merger with PwC, when the status quo would have been much less risky. She always prepared a lot and assumed that she has a higher bar to hurdle than her male counterparts. This is an excellent read (and even better Audiobook).
