“What if tradition and inertia proved to be so strong that all the bad habits snapped back into effect as soon as the epidemic ended? Crises are so exhausting that it’s natural to want to return to the comfort of the familiar. But if we were to do that and to resume working the way we had before, such a return would be yet another disaster, one that would last long after the pandemic had passed into history.” These ominous words from the introduction of “Competing in the New World of Work” by Keith Ferrazzi made me think. It reminded me of a question that a leader that I work with recently asked me: “How can my team take the good things from how we dealt with the Covid Pandemic and leave all the bad things that we never want to deal with again behind?”
This book provides some practical advice on how leaders and organizations can hang on to the gains, based on best practices from organizations that not only survived the pandemic, but actually thrived through it. It encourages leaders to collaborate through inclusion; promote their team resilience through humility, empathy, gratitude and generosity; and build a flexible workforce that is creative and cost-effective. It emphasizes that in this new world, collaboration is not about where employees show up for work, it is about how they show up. In short, it calls for abandoning the old ways and mastering radical adaptability.
