Angela Merkel’s meteoric rise from an obscure scientist in East Germany to the Leader of Europe is a true lesson in leadership. “The Chancellor: The Remarkable Odyssey of Angela Merkel” is one fascinating book that offers a deep look at the life and political career of the extremely private chancellor of Germany.
Unlike most political leaders, attention and credit were the two things that she sought the least. All she cared about was getting things done and achieving results. Her most valued trait was humility- when she first met President Obama she didn’t warm up to him because she thought he was all charm and no substance! Only later after getting to know each other, did the two leaders become world partners and good friends.
Merkel won a historic four consecutive terms as chancellor. When she campaigned, she never pretended to know all the answer and she didn’t patronize her people. Instead, she listened intently to them and used logic and facts to make her points. Among her team of loyal staffers who stayed with her throughout her time in politics, no flatterers were allowed- everyone was encouraged not only to dissent with her, but also to criticize her decisions. And when the Global pandemic hit in 2020, she dealt with it with compassion and science.
